FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
What is HypnoBirthing?
Founded by Marie Mongan in 1989, HypnoBirthing® teaches women and their partners to reconnect with their natural ability to birth, free from fear. HypnoBirthing® the Mongan Method empowers and educates parents-to-be over a comprehensive five week, antenatal course.
How does HypnoBirthing differ to other childbirth preparation programs?
Some childbirth preparation methods teach that pain is an inherent component of labour and birth and the best you can do is cope with it and manage the best you can. HypnoBirthing is based on the premise that childbirth does not necessarily need to be painful if the mother is sufficiently prepared and relaxed.
When women understand that pain is caused by constrictor hormones, created by fear, they learn, instead, to release fear thus creating endorphins—the feel good hormones. They are then able to change their expectations of a painful labour and are able to replace them with expectations of a more comfortable birth.
Rather than exhausting, shallow breathing and using distraction techniques, HypnoBirthing parents learn deep abdominal breathing and total relaxation, enabling the labouring mother to work in harmony with her body and her baby. This allows her to achieve a shorter, more comfortable labour for herself and baby.
When should I start HypnoBirthing classes?
You can start HypnoBirthing® classes at any time in your pregnancy. Some people recommend attending classes between 20-35 weeks however if you would like to attend earlier in your pregnancy you can. If you are quite late in your pregnancy but have only just heard about HypnoBirthing, please get in touch to see if we can still fit you in - I truly believe everyone should have access to this excellent program!
If you start earlier you will have more time to practice the relaxation and breathing techniques, and you will feel more knowledgeable and confident about pregnancy and birth earlier. On the other hand, you might find that if there is too long a gap between finishing HypnoBirthing classes and your due time, you may forget some of the information. It is really up to you, but feel free to contact Beloved Birth if you would like to discuss.
What is hypnosis?
Hypnosis is a natural state of mind that each of us experiences many times a day, such as when we're reading, daydreaming, engrossed in a movie, playing music, performing a repetitive task, and sometimes while driving. When in a hypnotic state we are deeply relaxed, fully aware and completely in control.
How is hypnosis used for birth?
a) Hypnosis enables us to deprogram ourselves of the negative beliefs surrounding birth, and replace those detrimental myths with confidence in a woman's ability to birth easily, safely and comfortably. This is key to interrupting the fear-tension-pain cycle.
b) Regular relaxation and hypnotic practice enables mum (and her partner) to be more calm and centred, leading to better decision-making, healthier child development and, again, an interruption of the fear-tension-pain cycle. Without her reserves being drained in order to cope with high levels of anxiety and pain, mum is free to enjoy her birth and her baby.
c) Hypnosis can be used to affect the body and allow it to function optimally. Just as athletes use mental rehearsal and hypnosis to improve their performance, mums can use these same techniques to prepare their body for a great birth.
Is HypnoBirthing backed up by research and scientific evidence?
Yes. In addition to an abundance of evidence supporting the use of hypnosis for birth, a specific study compared 1059 births of HypnoBirthing® women to the 2006 US national averages.
It was found that HypnoBirthing® mums experienced fewer medical interventions, including fewer Caesarean births, less pain medication, and fewer incidences of artificial induction of labour and artificial augmentation of labour. HypnoBirthing® mothers also had fewer incidences of preterm labour and low birth weight babies.
Does my partner/birth companion attend classes with me?
Yes. Your partner/birth companion plays a vital role in the birth and your shared preparation for it. We spend a lot of time in class talking about your birth companion's role and how they can best support you in labour. If your partner works away or is unable to be at all five classes in person, please contact Beloved Birth to discuss.
Will HypnoBirthing still benefit me if circumstances require medical intervention or a surgical birth?
HypnoBirthing preparation is beneficial for all families, including those who, because of genuine special circumstances, find themselves in the category of high-risk when their births take an unexpected turn.
Should the course of birth run differently from what was planned, and medical intervention or even surgical birth be required, HypnoBirthing enables parents to remain calm, relaxed and in control as they discuss options, evaluate the situation and make informed decisions concerning their birth.
Mothers who have required scheduled cesareans for medical reasons report being completely relaxed before, during and after the procedure. Many report that they needed little or no medication after the birth, and that they were able to return to normal functioning in a very short period of time.
How much do HypnoBirthing classes cost?
The fee for private HypnoBirthing classes run in the comfort of my home in Boya is $750.00. This price is per mother and her birthing companion. If you prefer, I am also able to teach the course at your home - additional travel charges will apply. Please request a travel estimate for your suburb at the time of booking.
